SAŽETAK

What is it that keeps attracting new guests and then even more new guests to Pola? Could it be, mayhap, those clouds winging across the cerulean canopy above these arches of stone? Or is it possibly the books, those filled with stories of the past? That energetic and exuberant tourist guide stepping from his coach of many colours - he and his like, perhaps?
Who could tell us where the story of Pula really begins? Pula, this town you just happened to choose, complete with all its idiosyncrasies, as a transit stopover, for a weekend sojourn or for an unforgettable holiday, even.
And how many of them - Ah, Jove! - how to number the chance, curiosity-filled travellers we have seen, slowly treading this patient and enduring stone to a smooth gloss?
In those now far off times the tourists of the day, still accoutred with spear, shield and similar souvenirs - just in case - stepped from their two-horse carrieges or disembarked from their ships into this soil, those veteran warlords no longer on active service and an occasional legionnarie elevated to greatness, came to surrender their war-weary shoulders and knees to the therapeutic and God-given blessings of the Istrian sea and sun.
Carrying their jewellery and tear bottles, with raucous, gaudy parrots perched on their shoulders Pula was for them, two thousand years before you finally arrived, a resort for rest and recuperation. For Roman Emperors and for patricians, for their wives, grandmothers and grandchildren who on their return to Aquileia, Rome, Carthage and Alexandria would parade their bronzed features on which the Mediterranean had impressed both its smiles and its furies around the coves, beaches and islands of Pula.
