August Selb was born in Munich on February 9, 1812 or 1813 and died in Munich on Novemher 1, 1859. His father was the Bavarian artist Josef Anton Selb, a well-known artist and author of many portraits-lithographs of German rulers. Young August carefully watched his father at work and became very skilled in lithographs himself. He lived in Trieste for a while, where between 1840 and 1841 he made several lithographs for the Trieste Society of Fine Arts. The Scaramanga Foundation holds two of his paintings (Woman Bather and Young Woman with Flowers) and a large lithograph (Shepherdess). ln 1842 he appeared in the catalogue of thc exhibition held in St. Anna's Church in Vienna. In spite of this, very few facts are known ahout his life, and with the exception of a short notice written by Wurzbach, he is hardly even mentioned in any biographical lexicon. It is certain though that in 1842 he travelled through Istria with Tischbein making vedute and portraits, particularly of women.
